Grammar-Translation Method: Is it still Applicable Nowadays?

Abstract

The Grammar-Translation Method (GTM) emerged as a dominant approach to foreign language teaching during the 19th century. Centered on the acquisition of grammatical rules and literary comprehension, GTM relegated oral communication to a secondary role. Consequently, students often struggled to apply their linguistic knowledge in real-world contexts. Despite its age and limitations, GTM surprisingly remains prevalent in Indonesian English language classrooms. This study aims to investigate the contemporary application of GTM in Indonesian EFL settings. Through a comprehensive literature review, it seeks to elucidate the method's definition, historical development, advantages, disadvantages, and core techniques. Additionally, the research will explore the extent to which GTM aligns with current language teaching principles. Findings are expected to demonstrate that while GTM  effectively facilitates grammar and vocabulary acquisition, it falls short in developing communicative competence. The study conclude by offering recommendations and implications for English language teachers to mitigate the shortcomings of GTM and promote more communicative language teaching approaches.
